As part of the BBRT team, Chris Martin is primarily interested in how biopolymers and biocomposites can broaden the availability of green material choices for the manufacture of furniture. He is interested in experimentation through application of the bio-materials to evaluate and maximize their potential for practical uses in building and design. Moreover, he is interested in how the unique properties of these materials might push the envelope of modern furniture design
In his own studio and through his courses in furniture design at Iowa State University, Martin is joining the concepts of sustainability and high end design with everyday living. Sustainable furniture design is the primary focus of a new experimental course that Martin is introducing in 2011 as part of the College of Design Integrated Studio Arts curriculum. After a critical discourse surrounding the social and environmental impacts of products and consumerism, students apply skills to demonstrate how the challenges of sustainable design can be resolved through choices of materials, processes, durability, and as importantly sustainable lasting design.
